Unwanted guests in the kitchen? Choose insecticide-free cockroach traps

Cockroaches are among the least welcome guests in the home. They love warm, humid environments and are particularly attracted to the kitchen, where they find shelter and food.

The most common species in domestic and working environments include Blatta orientalis, Blattella germanica, Periplaneta americana and Supella longipalpa.

Cockroaches are a year-round problem, with a peak in the warm months between April and October, when their reproductive cycle is most active. It is during these periods that cockroaches seek refuge in warm and humid spaces, easily nesting behind appliances, under sinks and near heat sources.

The presence of cockroaches in the home is not only unpleasant, but also poses several health risks:

  • Allergies and asthma: Cockroaches shed skin, faeces and saliva, which can be allergens and aggravate allergy and asthma symptoms, especially in children and vulnerable people.
  • Bacterial infections: Cockroaches can carry bacteria such as Salmonella, coli, and Staphylococcus, spreading them to surfaces, cooking utensils and food. This can cause food poisoning and gastrointestinal infections.
  • Food contamination: If roaches come into contact with food or work surfaces, they can contaminate food, increasing the risk of infection.
  • Diseases and parasites: In some areas, cockroaches can carry disease and parasites, such as worms, which can enter the human body through the consumption of contaminated food.

With these types of pests in particular, prevention is definitely better than cure! Here are our tips for preventing a cockroach infestation in your home:

  1. Keep floors, counters and all kitchen surfaces clean, removing crumbs and food debris that might attract them.
  2. Dispose of waste daily and use containers with closed lids. Cockroaches are attracted to the smell of garbage and may nest near open or unsealed containers.
  3. Store food in airtight containers to prevent odours from spreading into the environment and attracting unwelcome housemates. Avoid leaving uncovered food on shelves.
  4. Roaches are attracted to moisture, so immediately fix any leaks under the sink or near appliances to reduce access points to water sources.
  5. Regularly air humid environments such as kitchens and bathrooms to prevent the accumulation of humidity, a factor that favours proliferation and nesting.
  6. Seals cracks and crevices in walls, floors and around window frames. These insects can also use small openings to enter your home and hide.
  7. Use preventive traps: set adhesive traps to monitor the presence of cockroaches and intervene promptly, thus reducing the risk of a real infestation.
